Nitrous Oxide

What Is N₂O?

Nitrous oxide (N₂O), is a safe and effective sedative, commonly used in dentistry to help patients feel calm and relaxed during treatment. N₂O is a colourless, odourless gas that is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It's often referred to as "laughing gas" because it can create feelings of light-headedness, euphoria, and even the giggles in some people.

How Does It Work?

Once inhaled, nitrous oxide works quickly, helping to reduce anxiety and fear, promoting a sense of relaxation and dull pain perception.  N₂O is often used for patients who are nervous, have a strong gag reflex, or are undergoing a longer or more involved procedure. One of the biggest benefits of nitrous oxide is that it begins to work within minutes and its effects wear off almost immediately once the gas is stopped. Most patients can drive themselves home and return to normal activities soon after.

Why Is It Considered Safe?

Nitrous oxide is widely regarded as a safe sedation option because it is non-invasive. The sedation level can be adjusted easily, it has few side effects when administered by a trained professional.

Is Laughing Gas Right for You?

If you feel anxious about dental visits, have had negative dental experiences in the past or struggle with sensitivity or a strong gag reflex...laughing gas might be a great option for making your next visit more comfortable.

What Happens After Laughing Gas?

Once your procedure is complete and the nitrous oxide is turned off, your hygienist will provide you with 100% oxygen for five minutes. This important step helps to flush any remaining gas from your lungs, prevent side effects, such as headaches and helps you feel alert, awake, and ready to go.

What About Eating and Drinking?

Your meals matter when receiving nitrous oxide, eat lightly before your appointment — a small snack is okay, but avoid heavy or greasy foods. After your procedure, avoid large meals for at least three hours, as your stomach might still be a bit sensitive.

After all, good dental habits are no joke!
